From Bridesmaids to Midnight in Paris and Cedar Rapids, Hollywood brought us these Top 10 Romance Movies of 2011. We were fortunate to attend an Oscar Screening for Bridesmaids, and watched Midnight in Paris three times in the theater (is that crazy?) Cedar Rapids starring Ed Helms(The Office) was actually our favorite Sundance 2011 film, and there were many more romantic moments captured on the big screen this year. As we approach awards season with Golden Globe Nominees announced, below are our Top 10 picks in order of preference for your consideration. We’d love to have you comment on your favorites and/or share your picks on our Facebook book page http://facebook.com/greatlifegreatlove.

We’d love to have you add Comments on your favorites and/or share your picks on our Facebook book page http://facebook.com/greatlifegreatlove.

1. Bridesmaids – This romantic comedy of the year made millions laugh out loud at the box office starring Kristen Wiig (SNL, who plays the Maid of Honor/ Annie), Maya Rudolph (SNL, Bride/ Lillian) and Rose Bryne (jealous friend/Helen Harris.) Maya Rudolph described the filming experience at a recent Oscar screening in LA, “You rarely get that much freedom to be given what your character is, what you’re supposed to say, get it out, and then you just goof and laugh and have fun.” One of the funniest scenes is the tug of war over the bride between Annie and Helen, who compete to be Lillian’s BFF forever and host the perfect Parisian-theme shower. And just when Annie looks like she’ll never meet a decent guy and get out of her mother’s house, Officer Nathan Jones (Chris O’Dowd) genuinely falls for her antics when he pulls her over for tickets. When describing the movie preparation, Ellie Kemper (The Office/ Becca) reflected, “Women go crazy when they get married…When thinking about those characters, you’re certainly drawn to who you know.” And at the end of the Oscar screening Q and A, Wendi McLendon-Covey (Rules of Engagement/ Rita) added, “At the premier, Kristen’s mom gave us all little shrimp forks,” (glad they weren’t given forks during filming…LOL)

2. Midnight in Paris - If you want to watch a great love story in the most romantic city on earth, Midnight in Paris starring Owen Wilson (Gil) and Rachel McAdams (Inez) is Woody Allen magic! From the Eiffel Tower to the Notre Dame Cathedral and Louvre Museum, this Cannes Film Festival 2011 hit is drumming up Oscar buzz. It’s a combination comedy and fantasy that lights up the screen as Gil’s time travel fantasies to the roaring 1920s. Living in his dreams, Gil declares that he wants to stay in Paris (his great love) in response to his fiancé Inez’s goal to have a house in Malibu. This disconnect is your first clue that their marriage might not make it to the alter. As Gil roams the streets at night, he meets literary giants: Ernest Heminway (Corey Stoll), Pablo Picasso (Marical di Fonzo Bo), Gertrude Stein (Kathy Bates) and Salvador Dali (Adrian Brody, my favorite), and you’ll be glued to the story as history and romance unfold.

3. Crazy, Stupid, Love - It’s worth watching Crazy, Stupid, Love just to see Ryan Gosling (Jacob) as the cocky bachelor with all the right moves giving advice to Steve Carell (Cal) who’s socially challenged and desperately wants to win his wife (Julianne Moore) back. The best part of the movie is when Ryan tries to impress Emma Stone (Hannah) with his smooth moves and sexy chest, and gets challenged. Jacob and Cal could have easily played The Odd Couple on TV because their personalities, preferences for women and styles are at opposite extremes. Following Blue Valentine last year, Ryan had 3 star roles in Crazy, Stupid, Love, along with Drive and Ides of March (both Oscar contenders.)

4. Friends with Benefits - The sexual tension between Mila Kunis (Jamie Rellis) and Justin Timberlake (Dylan Harper) in Friends with Benefits makes this romantic comedy a must-see film. When Jamie recruits Dylan to run the art department at GQ magazine from LA, she is his only friend, and they soon become friends with benefits on the heels of bad breakups. When they struggle to read the relationship clues from each other, this film gets you hooked into what will happen next. It’s a NYC love story with a road trip back to Hollywood for Thanksgiving that will make you laugh out loud. While Jamie and Dylan make promises to never fall for each other, you can guess where this romantic comedy is headed.

5. Cedar Rapids – The best movie at Sundance 2011 (in my book) was Cedar Rapids starring Ed Helms (The Office), John C Reilly, Anne Heche (Hung), Sigourney Weaver, Isiah Whitlock Jr (The Wire) and Stephen Root (24, Seinfeld.) When Ed Helms (Tim Lippe) gets asked to represent BrownStar Insurance at the annual insurance convention by his boss, he bravely prepares for his big city adventure and competition for the 4-Star Award. Tim’s naïve about life and love, which makes great comedy with his love affairs. If you’ve ever gone on a business trip that got completely out of control, you’ll LOL at the craziness the cast pulls to escape the insurance business realities. John C Reilly (Dean Ziegler), who is Tim Lippe’s roommate, steels the show with no inhibitions in the hotel pool. Isiah Whitlock Jr (Ronald Wilkes) is Tim’s other roommate, who tries to keep everyone calm in complete chaos. And Anne Heche (Joan Ostrowski-Fox) lets go from the pressures of her family making this film a pure comedy act.

6. Like Crazy - In this romance hit about long-distance love, Director Drake Doremus, Anton Yelchin (Jacob) and Felicity Jones (Anna) capture the heartache involved having 6,000 miles between a couple living in London and Los Angeles. You can feel every emotion that they’re going through as they text each other, deal with time zone differences, and wonder what the other person is doing all the time. Jennifer Lawrence (Academy Award Nominee for Sundance hit, Winter’s Bone) works with Jacob, and plays a much different role as Jacob’s distraction when the couple spends months separated. Like Crazy is also getting great Oscar buzz, and was the Sundance Grand Jury Drama winner (same prize that Precious won.)

7. Hall Pass – Owen Wilson (Midnight in Paris), Jenna Fischer (The Office), Jason Sudeikis (SNL) and Christina Applegate (Going the Distance) create romantic comedy magic in Hall Pass. When Owen (Rick) and Jason (Fred) become restless husbands, their wives decide to give them a week off from marriage so that they can live it up as bachelors again. While Jenna (Maggie) and Christina (Grace) hesitate giving their husbands this “get out of jail free” card, you’ll laugh out loud when the girls start enjoying their marriage time out more than the guys.

8. No Strings Attached - Natalie Portman (Emma/ Black Swan) and Ashton Kutcher (Adam/ Valentine’s Day) almost ruin their life-long friendship by having sex one morning in No Strings Attached. To protect their friendship, they decide to have a “no strings attached” pack, which means no jealousy, expectations, fighting, or flowers. While they jokingly say that they can do whatever they want, as long as they don’t fall in love, the story pulls you in wondering who will break their pack first.

9. New Years Eve - If you want a light-hearted movie with a gazillion stars, Gary Marshall has done it again with New Years Eve. It’s the Love Actually film of 2011. You’ll be wondering if Jon Bon Jovi, who plays the rock star Jensen performing in Times Square, will win his ex-girlfriend back, Katherine Heigl (Laura). When Ashton Kutcher (Randy) gets stuck in an elevator with the Glee star, Lea Michele (Elise), there are some very awkward moments that create great comedy. Hilary Swank (Claire Morgan) as the VP of the Times Square Ball and Robert DiNiro (Stan Harris) in the hospital are both priceless in their performances. Zac Efron (Paul) plays the compassionate delivery guy who works to make Michelle Pfeiffer’s (Ingrid) resolutions list come true by midnight. And then of course, you have to include Josh Duhamel (Sam) and Sarah Jessica Parker (Kim) to ignite fireworks in this romantic comedy.

10. The Change Up – While many might be surprised by this pick, Ryan Reynolds (Mitch), Jason Bateman (Dave) and Olivia Wilde (Sabrina) are very funny in The Change-Up when two men suddenly find themselves in each other’s bodies that creates mass confusion. Mitch is a want-to-be actor, who is suddenly giving lawyer presentations in the boardroom, taking care of twins and sleeping with his friend’s sexy wife (Leslie Mann.) As the two leads are continually challenged to keep each other’s lives together, Dave goes to an acting job for Mitch with major twists in the plot and fends off late night callers that challenge his fidelity. Don’t pay attention to the not-so-great box office sales because The Change-Up will be a hit on DVD and Video on Demand.

And while Drive had off-the-charts chemistry between the two leads, Ryan Gosling and Carey Mulligan, we’ll leave that film for our Top 10 Movies of 2011. Stay tuned on January 15, 2012, when Bridesmaids and Midnight and Paris compete for the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical, and Ryan Gosling is nominated for his role in Crazy, Stupid, Love. Thank you Hollywood for the romance and laughs, and please add your picks in the comments and/or on our Great Life Great Love Facebook page.

If you want a great summer escape to the most romantic city on earth, Midnight in Paris with Owen Wilson (Gil) and Rachel McAdams (Inez) is your Woody Allen ticket! From the Eiffel Tower to the Notre Dame Cathedral and Louvre Museum, this Cannes Film Festival 2011 hit will make you want more. It’s a combination comedy and fantasy that lights up the screen with Paris magic. When Gil declares that he wants to stay in Paris in response to his fiance Inez’s dream to have a house in Malibu, it’s your first hint of the romantic disconnect that gets bigger as the story unfolds.

What we learned about love in this entertaining tale is that you must live in the same world to make a relationship work. Gil is writing a novel about an owner of a nostalgic shop, and decides to wander the streets of Paris to find inspiration for his new book. He has no intentions of returning to Hollywood as a screenwriter, and leaves Inez to go out dancing with friends.
Click here to view the embedded video.
You’ll be in awe when the clock strikes midnight, and Gil is suddenly time-traveling back into the roaring twenties. He’s shocked to be sharing his ideas with classic artists such as Ernest Hemingway (Corey Stoll), Pablo Picasso (Marical di Fonzo Bo), Gertrude Stein (Kathy Bates) and Salvador Dali (Adrian Brody, my favorite). There are some very funny and awkward encounters with a typical Woody Allen style, but I won’t spoil them here for you.

As you can imagine, Gil is completely taken by his new friends (or should we say very, old friends) who are living a great artist life in Paris. To continue to roam the streets at night, Gil’s growing excuses make his soon-to-be parents-in-laws very suspicious of his marriage intentions. He simply can’t resist sharing champagne cocktails with Zelda Fitzgerald (Alison Pill) and F. Scott Fitzgerald (Tom Hiddleston), dancing by the carousel, and discussing his novel with Gertrude Stein. Distracted by a young Parisian woman Adriana (Marianne Cotillard, who you know from Inception,) Gil falls madly in love with his fantasy world.

When left alone in Paris without her fiance, Inez pursues a different agenda that includes shopping, sightseeing and wine tasting. You’ll have to see Midnight in Paris to find out whether the couple can come back to reality and work things out. You also don’t want to miss the Paris magic walking along the Seine River, Auguste Rodin’s Thinker, and the cafes on every corner. As one friend told me, “You will definitely want to go to Paris after you see it.” It’s rated PG so all ages should go for a clever history lesson too. Hollywood really knows how to write the best love quotes that trigger an emotional reaction and make us think about our own relationships.

From Renee Zwelleger in Bridget Jones to Bill Pullman in Sleepless in Seattle and Ashton Kutcher in Valentine’s Day, here are 10 of our favorite love quotes from some of the top movies.
If you’re ready for a refreshing comedy, check out the Sundance 2011 hit, Cedar Rapids about a group of insurance agents who travel to the big city of Cedar Rapids, Iowa (in theaters Feb 11, 2011). You’ll love the chemistry and laughs with this all-star cast: Ed Helms, John C Reilly, Anne Heche, Sigourney Weaver, Isiah Whitlock Jr (The Wire) and Stephen Root (24, Seinfeld.) When Ed Helms (Tim Lippe) gets asked to represent BrownStar Insurance at the annual convention by his boss, he bravely prepares for his big city adventure and competition for the 4-Star Award. Tim’s naïve about life and love, which makes for great comedy.

Without giving away the laughs, this movie is relevant and real. If you’ve ever gone on a business trip that got a little out of control, you’ll LOL at the craziness as the cast escapes reality. John C Reilly (Dean Ziegler), who is Tim Lippe’s roommate, steels the show with no inhibitions. Isiah Whitlock Jr (Ronald Wilkes) is Tim’s other roommate, who tries to keep everyone calm in the middle of complete chaos. And Anne Heche (Joan Ostrowski-Fox) lets go from the pressures of her family.
Click here to view the embedded video.
What we learned about love is that there’s a lot more to relationships than lust. Tim falls for any woman who shows interest and gives him attention. Sigourney Weaver plays the cougar lover who used to be his teacher, and Tim tells everyone that they are “pre-engaged” (ok, what does that mean? When Tim goes to the convention, he falls for two other women (you’ll have to watch the film to see what happens.) If think you’re pre-engaged, think again.

During the big trip, Tim Lippe gets lured by Alia Shawkat (Bree) at the hotel to a wild party, the guy driving the car is Seth Morris (Uncle Ken.) Seth is one of the comedians at the Upright Citizens Brigade who stars in their Facebook Improv Show (hysterical show), and has also been seen on Curb Your Enthusiam, Funny or Die, and in I Love You Man. Watch for Seth in more hit comedies.

When I ran into Stephen Root (Ed’s boss, Bill, at BrownStar Insurance) on Main Street in Park City, he explained that the movie will be rolled out slowly similar to Little Miss Sunshine (which makes sense because this is an unexpected comedy that is bound to hit home with fans.) This LOL Must-See movie gets my Sundance Best of 2011 Award. It was definitely worth getting up for the 9:00am premiere showing.
If you’ve ever struggled with a long-distance relationship, Like Crazy is for you. In this entertaining Sundance 2011 hit, Drake Doremus (Director), Anton Yelchin (Jacob) and Felicity Jones (Anna) capture the heartache involved in long-distance love. This young couple has extraordinary circumstances with a 6,000 mile distance between London and Los Angeles, and you can feel every emotion that they’re going through as they text each other, deal with time zone differences, and wonder what the other person is doing all the time. Jennifer Lawrence (Oscar Nominee for Sundance hit, Winter’s Bone) works with Jacob, and plays a much different role as Jacob’s distraction when the couple spends months separated. Many congrats to Drake Doremus for winning the Grand Jury Prize Drama at the festival (same prize Precious won.)
Click here to view the embedded video.
When Anna and Jacob fall hard for each other while going to college in Los Angeles, they don’t expect to be separated for months due to Anna’s Visa challenges. During their geographic divide, the couple thinks about dating other people, getting married, and moving. These are all questions that anyone in a long-distance relationship needs to address, which makes this film very relatable (except 6,000 miles is a stretch.) You’ll also love Alex Kingston (Jackie) and Oliver Muirhead (Bernard) as Anna’s supportive parents in this film, which Drake Doremus discusses in the Q and A in this Youtube video: Great Love Review - Like Crazy.

When I bumped into Anton Yelchin on Main Street after the premiere, I told him that his film helped me coach an actress from Los Angeles at a party. She will remain anonymous, but has been on big TV hits like 90210. Her long distance love is between Los Angeles and San Francisco, and I gave her the same advice that I would give the couple in Like Crazy – which is communicate, communicate, communicate. While you don’t want to come across as needy or desperate, you need to talk about whether you’re going to see other people, and whether it is realistic to ever be in the same city. If you’re not talking, you can waste a huge amount of time in a fantasy land, which I want this actress to avoid.

You’ll need to see Like Crazy to find out if Jacob and Anna go the distance. Paramount Pictures just picked up the film so it will come to a theater near you. And if you want some more love tips, Dating Coaching, and Great Love Reviews with love lessons from the big screen, visit my website, Great Life Great Love.

After coaching both men and women how to increase their self-esteem as a Life and Love Coach, the celebrity panels for Miss Representation and Women in Film at the Sundance Film Festival hit close to home. My latest project, Great Life Great Love, is about helping singles build a Great Life to attract Great Love. If you love yourself first, it’s much easier to attract great relationships. We all want to feel good inside, and it’s important that media images fuel confidence over fear. With 51% of the US population being female, Miss Representation is a call-to-action for both men and women to change the media perceptions of women.

Sundance is buzzing this year about the documentary, Miss Representation, and the panel after the premiere shared powerful insights from the film. This Levi’s sponsored event featured Jennifer Siebel Newsom (screenwriter/director, Miss Representation), Geena Davis, Gloria Steinem, Barbara J. Berg (Author), Jim Steyer (Common Sense Media) and Pat Mitchell (President/CEO Paley Center for Media and Former President/CEO of PBS) as the moderator. It’s no surprise that all Sundance showings for this film are sold out because Jennifer Siebel Newsom’s film includes important messages about how women are portrayed by the media and interviews with role models such as Katie Couric, Jane Fonda, Lisa Ling (OWN Producer), Dr. Condoleezza Rice, Margaret Cho (Comedian), Daphne Zuniga, Paul Haggis and many other female and male influencers.
Click here to view the embedded video.
During the Miss Representation panel, Geena Davis shared her passion for empowering women, what it was like to play the first female president on TV, and results of a recent study about how women are portrayed by the media to children 11 and under. Geena shared, “Consider this. In G-rated movies, the female characters wear the same amount of sexually revealing clothing as the characters in R-rated movies. So what message are we sending to both girls and boys at a very very vulnerable age…if the female characters are one-dimensional, side-lined, hyper-sexualized or simply not there at all? What we’re saying to them is that women and girls have far less value in our society than men and boys.”

Pat Mitchell closed the panel by asking everyone to get involved. Pat added, “The one thing that Jenn’s film reminds us of,…is gender is not a zero sum game… We’re not talking about women win, men loose…Women’s roles change, men’s get worse. No. We are all in this together.” To get involved visit, Miss Representation, http://missrepresentation.org or Levi’s Shape What’s to Come.

The theme for this WIF event was “Fearlessness.” Their panel featured female leaders in the entertainment business including: Joslyn Barnes (executive producer, The Black Power Mixtape), Karin Chien (producer, Circumstance), Annie Roney (Managing Director, ro*co films international), Susan Saladoff (director, Hot Coffee), Cathy Schulman (Producer/President of Mandalay Vision and WIF, Salvation Boulevard, Another Happy Day), Sandra Valde-Hansen (Cinematographer, KABOOM!) and Moderated by Lucy Webb (producer for WIF Los Angeles.)

If you’re ready for an entertaining film that’s based on a true story and is all about relationships, you’ll love The Fighter with Mark Wahlberg (“Irish” Mickey Ward), Christian Bale (Dickey Eklund) and Amy Adams (Mickey’s girlfriend Charlene Fleming.) When Mickey gets beaten badly in the opening fight by a boxer who is 20 pounds heavier, the film turns into a powerful comeback story with many conflicts between love and money.
Everyone wants a piece of Mickey, and there is a clear divide between who really cares, and who’s there for their own personal gain in this very small town story.

Christian Bale (Dickey) steals the movie (in my opinion) as Mickey’s older brother, trainer and crackhead in Lowell, Massachusetts. While everyone knows Dickey’s a troublemaker, Mickey remains loyal to the guy who taught him how to box. Dickey was his childhood idol, who fought Sugar Ray Leonard in the ring. When reflecting on his 5 minutes of fame often, Dickey has camera crews capturing every moment for a documentary that later has a very different message. Mickey’s also very close his mother, Melissa Leo (Alice Ward), who is a bit of a control freak. She seems much more interested in the limo rides, cocktails and paychecks than setting up good fights for her youngest. As family business managers, Dickey and his mother are in complete control of Mickey - until love enters the picture.
Click here to view the embedded video.
When Mickey falls hard for Charlene (Amy Adams as the sassy red-head bartender at the local hang-out), the family’s relationships get tested on many levels. During a family meeting with the 9 children (2 boys and 7 girls), Charlene boldly questions their intentions and encourages Mickey to go out on his own. The couple’s great love chemistry is undeniable, and Mickey finally has a true ally in his corner. Even when the family tries to tear her down, Mickey’s mind and heart are set on Charlene.

You’ll have to watch the movie to see the twists in Mickey’s journey, and how the family conflicts get resolved. If you have people on your team who are not real deals, replace them with winners immediately. You want to find a Great Love who sincerely cares, makes you laugh and backs you up, even when you’re down.
If you want to see a fun and light-hearted romantic comedy, How Do You Know with Reese Witherspoon (Lisa), Owen Wilson (Matty), Paul Rudd (George) and Jack Nicholson (George’s dad, Charles) is the ticket this holiday. Lisa plays a professional softball player, who finds herself in the middle of a career crisis and love-triangle twists while searching for her “regular plan.” Everyone in this movie is actually going through a self-discovery struggle, making How Do you Know the perfect title.

This movie will make you ask yourself the questions everyone wants answered:
How do you know if you’re in the right job?
How do you know if you can trust your family?
How do you know what’s most important in life?
How do you know if you’re in love?

Even though Reese (Lisa) is 100% committed to her softball team’s success, it doesn’t mean her big boss values her contributions. When she finds herself dumped by the coach, Lisa gets her romantic priorities twisted between the arrogant sports player Owen (Matty) and the humble, lawsuit challenged Paul (George.) While Owen tries to break his playboy lifestyle, Paul is trying to play it cool when his world is crumbling.
Click here to view the embedded video.
Without giving away all of the laughs in this movie (the trailer already gives away too many), you really can’t dislike this movie because the characters are perfectly cast. Reese (Lisa) questions everything about romance as she faces the reality that her sports career is over. Owen (Matty) plays the spoiled baseball star who suddenly decides that he wants Reese to move in, but is clueless about making emotional connections. Lisa gets easily distracted by Paul (George) because he’s real and not into games. You can sit on the floor, laugh, and be yourself with Paul. And Jack Nicholson is being Jack in his reflection speeches to his son as their firm faces a lawsuit and major life decisions.

While How Do You Know only gets 3 stars in my book, this movie is a great reminder that when you’re faced with career challenges, nothing is more important than your support team. And when looking for love, it’s not about lust or fancy gifts. You want to find a Great Love who will make you laugh and back you up if you get cut from your team.
